Biography

Brendan Rafferty's passion for art started at a very young age in his native Armagh. Surrounded in Celtic tradition he studied copper art when he was a teenager. His career in construction brought him like so many of his peers to England and the US. Whilst away from home his love of all things historic became much more important to him. He shared his interest in Celtic art with many Irish Americans and their enthusiasm suggested to him that there was an opportunity for him to develop his talent further.

In 2004 Brendan returned home to Ireland with his wife Deirdre and set up home in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan. He used this opportunity to develop his passion into his full time career. The techniques used by Brendan are based on the ancient French tradition of Repousse which dates back to the 12th Century. It is accepted in the art world that few techniques offer 'such diversity of expression'. It is this depth and diversity of expression that has turned Brendan's lifetime interest into a labour of love.

The Artistic Process

Each piece is inspired by a traditional image and begins by drawing onto a fine copper sheet. Using the ancient skills of Repousse, the design is hand crafted into the design the copper from both sides using a specialist collection of precision tools. the work with the copper continues until Brendan is satisfied with the design. the finishing techniques preserve its appeal and what emerges is a unique three dimensional original work of art.
